Wigan Grammar School

Ken Downham

Ken Downham, captain of the school 1st cricket XI, was selected to play for Wigan Cricket Club first XI against Chorley C.C. on 28th May 1950.
Bowling for Wigan Ken had a remarkable afternoon. His first victim was caught by Gerry Finan, also a member of the schools 1st XI and the next three batsmen were clean bowled. In his following over Ken bowled the remaining batsmen to produce a final analysis of five wickets for four runs in five balls.
The match ball, suitably inscribed to commemorate Ken's performance, was presented by Ken to Wigan Grammar School Old Boys at the Annual Reunion Dinner on February 21st 2009 and is on display in the school trophy cabinet  in the Thomas Linnacre Centre, formerly the location of the fourth Wigan Grammar School.
