|Ken Downham, captain of the
school 1st cricket XI, was selected to play for Wigan Cricket Club
first XI against Chorley C.C. on 28th May 1950.
Bowling for Wigan
Ken had a remarkable afternoon. His first victim was caught by Gerry
Finan, also a member of the schools 1st XI and the next three batsmen
were clean bowled. In his following over Ken bowled the remaining
batsmen to produce a final analysis of five wickets for four runs in
The match ball, suitably inscribed to commemorate Ken's
performance, was presented by Ken to Wigan Grammar School Old Boys at the
Annual Reunion Dinner on February 21st 2009 and is on display in the
school trophy cabinet in the Thomas Linnacre Centre, formerly the
location of the fourth Wigan Grammar School.
