Sadly,
Bill passed away in 2009
Bill was born and brought up in Wigan and attended the Grammar School
from 1937 until 1944. He was a keen and active sportsman excelling both
as a member of the school swimming team and the rugby first XV.
He continued his sporting career after leaving the school, playing
rugby for Wigan Old Boys. He was also a very keen racquets man, playing
squash and badminton for many years for both Wigan Cricket Club and
Shevington Casuals badminton teams. In later years he enjoyed both
snooker and bowls at Bellingham Bowling Club where he was an active and
popular member, becoming President on thre occasions and subsequently
becoming a life Vice President. It was some comfort to his family that
he enjoyed several games of snooker and a few whiskies on the night he
died.
On leaving school, Bill served with the Fleet Air Arm, followed by a
short career in banking before joining the well established family
stall of Gibson and Young in Wigan Market Hall, selling glass and fancy
goods. He worked there with his wife Olive until his death. They made
many friends amongst other stallholders and customers and Bill was well
known for his great kindness, generosity and jovial and gentle approach
to life.
Bill was an extremely devoted family man to his wife Olive, daughter
Faye, son Aiden and four grandchildren. They have many happy memories
to look back on. The family were renowned amongst friends and
neighbours for their wonderful parties where Bill could always be
relied upon to brighten up proceedings. |
